Shukar Collective – Urban Gypsy

This is not like other music. The Romanian Gypsy musical tradition that grew up alongside bear taming, ursari, meets urban electronica. Genre and generation hopping at its most out there but don’t worry no animals were hurt in the recording of this album.

Trickbaby – Hanging Around

Every now and then you get a CD so immediately lovable and interesting that you wonder if the rest of the country has been listening to this on Top of the Pops while you have been tuning in to Radio 3. You would have to be very po-faced not to love Trickbaby.

Platinum Pied Pipers – Triple P

The best soulful hip hop album I have heard in so long I think I might have Alzheimer’s. At times, thumping, soulful and intelligent (and usually all three at once), it is hard to imagine a more satisfying hip hop / soul album coming out this year.
